Though they are not used in all the countries, but also it is not illegal to earn or mine cryptocurrencies. It is a real cryptocurrency. Though it remains in pre-release mode, 18+ million pionners are there. On 100 million pi users, the mining will automatically be over.

You can install "pi network" application from google play store. It is freeware application, anyone can use and mine pi coins.
